My take: They get 5 percent better, 100 percent less likable. In the end they will regret this trade I feel. Although if anybody can tame Barry Bonds-lite, I suppose it's Leyland.
Maybe Detroit has a way of calming prickly pears (see: Rogers, Kenny). If they just plunk him in the DH spot all year, he should stay reasonably healthy. They were going to have to make some sort of move like this.
I've always liked watching Shef at the plate; we'll see how the grouch plays out in that fun-loving playhouse.
