Tigers in 2006?

From ESPN.com's Jayson Stark:

"They're quite a match, this team and this manager. In 14 seasons as a manager, Leyland has never been given a team capable of winning -- and not won. Go back and take a look some time. The Tigers, meanwhile, haven't had a winning season -- with any manager -- since 1993, under Sparky Anderson. That was seven managers ago."

Jim Leyland is passionate, you might even say fiery . . . ABOUT BEING A SMOKIN' BASEBALL MANAGER!

Jorge L. Ortiz reports in USA Today . . .

"And those who tsk-tsked at the sight of Leyland puffing away in a corner of the dugout during games might be heartened to learn he's going to try to quit. That was the promise he made to daughter Kellie when he took the Tigers job in early October.

"His inability to break the habit so far, Leyland insists, is unrelated to the pressures of the job.

"'Let me put it this way,' Leyland says, fierily. 'Whether I smoke or don't smoke is not going to have a damn thing to do with whether we win or lose.'"
